The B Sides

This group exhibition explores the dynamic relationship between house music and contemporary art. Artists are working in various media such as installation, painting, performance, photography, sculpture, and video.

The B-Sides

This dynamic exhibition brings the discotheque to Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art. The advent of house music in the 1980s has influenced not only popular music in the United States and abroad but also contemporary art and culture. "The B Sides" introduces artists who have been inspired by dance music experiences from New Jersey and New York – two epicenters in the birth of house music. Themes among many of the works of art presented here include the body, race, spirituality, gender expression, and sexual orientation. "The B Sides" also includes works about the local Newark scene with particular attention to the creativity of house-ball culture, new music festivals, and Club Zanzibar at the Lincoln Motel that is no longer in existence.

Come on in and explore the power of house music to bring together people of diverse backgrounds!
